Wendy Goldthorp
Former Army Reserve, Wendy Goldthorp, is running 256 miles self-supported along the South West Coast Path in September 2021
Twenty years ago I became an Army Reserve, first in the Royal Engineers and then with REME. I served for 5 years and in my last year was deployed overseas with the regular Army. Some 12 months after I was demobilised I developed post traumatic stress. I received treatment at the time and for a while it subsided.
In 2018 I experienced a relapse caused by extreme stress in my life. I knew I needed professional support quickly, but accessing treatment proved difficult. Before finding Rock2Recovery, I approached four different organisations for help and while sympathetic, they were unable to assist due to the particular stressor causing my condition, but one of them did direct me to R2R.
The ongoing coaching and support I have received from R2R has been priceless and I cannot thank them enough. I made a promise to myself that when I was in a position to do so, I would complete a challenge to raise funds for R2R. Now it’s time to make good on that promise.
R2R’s Mission:
To save and change the lives of those in our Armed Forces, our veteran community, emergency services and their families who are affected by stress.
R2R's approach is to inspire, coach and motivate towards a more positive future.
R2R’s Purpose:
To create positive change when it is needed most. Following our unique experiences, we recognise the need for rapid preventative interventions, specific coaching and assistance, including the provision of short and long-term refocusing support for veterans leaving the service with brain injuries and mental health issues attributable to their period of service.
My Challenge:
I celebrated the start of my last decade by running 156 miles. Now, 10 years on, I want to go one better and complete 256 miles along the South West Coast Path in September 2021. As I will be carrying my own kit and food supplies, I will have my work cut out to build my strength, fitness and stamina between now and then. (Separately, I am also on the hunt for certain items on my kit list if you’re able to help).
I know that my own experiences while serving are far from unique. R2R’s work is much needed to continue to support veterans. I would therefore be grateful if you would consider sponsoring me for this epic ultramarathon adventure. Thank you.
